Theatre

Essential Romeo and Juliet

Courses in theatre at South Plains College provide fundamental training for students who are preparing for careers in professional theatre or who wish to teach theatre in public and private schools.

Students majoring in theatre receive firsthand experience in acting and in staging productions. Theatre students have the opportunity to perform in and help produce four major productions each year at South Plains College. Two of these productions are musicals.

South Plains College's two-year degree program in theatre is designed to provide the student with successful transfer to a university to complete a bachelor's degree. The advantage of beginning a college education at South Plains College is evident in the small classes and personal attention the student receives, in addition to the opportunity to perform and help produce top-rated theatrical productions.

Superior theatre facilities provide South Plains College theatre students an exceptional educational experience. The Theatre for the Performing Arts, located on the Levelland campus, has a seating capacity of 220. The theatre houses a counterweight fly system for presenting scenery, a modern sound system which can handle 24 wireless microphones, a spacious makeup and costuming area, an electronic lighting system, and a fully equipped workshop for the construction and storage of sets and properties.

The South Plains College theatre program is an institutional member of the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA). All TETA members are recognized as outstanding theatre programs in the state of Texas. Through the program's affiliation with this elite organization, South Plains College theatre students transferring to a university or private theatrical program are eligible for numerous scholarship opportunities. South Plains College theatrical productions have received superior ratings in competition with community college theatre programs from across the state.

South Plains College offers a number of scholarships for theatre majors and non-majors. Scholarship programs include the Iris Upshaw Scholarship for acting and the Monty Roberts Memorial Scholarship for both acting and technical work. Several departmental scholarships are also offered.
